Do I have to stop, or only give way?
At an upside-down triangle you give way and drive on if the road is clear. At STOP you always come to a full stop first.
An upside-down triangle with a red border means: give way. You do not have to stop if nobody is coming. If there is traffic on the crossing road, you let it go first.
An octagonal STOP sign is stricter. You always come to a complete stop first, even if the road looks empty, and then you give way.
Shark's teeth on the road belong with giving way, not with a compulsory stop. The sign beats any doubt about the markings.
